COMBATING SOCIAL ISOLATION IS MORE IMPORTANT NOW THAN EVER.
"I used to walk my dog through a nearby retirement community as I have established friendships with many of the residents. Since the emergence of COVID-19 the retirement community has established a strict no-visitor policy. In addition, social activities and group dining options have been curtailed. While these measures are necessary to protect a highly susceptible population from the virus, seniors are also disproportionately affected by social isolation.
Letters to Seniors is a fantastic idea that will meet an under-resourced need for supporting the mental and emotional health of senior citizens. Moreover, I believe that the students who volunteer their time to this program will benefit from the life experiences of their senior pen pals. I wholeheartedly support the creators of Letters to Seniors in their effort to bring students and seniors together to see each other through these extraordinarily challenging times."
Letters to Seniors is a 501(c)(3) organization devoted to connecting students with senior citizens in their communities through handwritten letters. Our purpose is to develop meaningful relationships between students and seniors to combat the effects of social isolation and to encourage students to engage with members of their community.
